He has not ever tried foxpro or VFP and right now he's trying to make Visual Objects work. Just curious, what made you try VFP? I have been trying to get him to give it a shot forever. I'm hoping for some ideas on how to get a die-hard clipper-head to give VFP a try. . .

I came away from Devcon believing VFP is very healthy even if it doesn't tie my shoes for me, and what's more, I felt that way before Devcon. I would think there are more productive things to talk about. . .-Rick

Hi Rick,

I still maintain some Clipper apps. I was a dBase programmer and when Clipper came along I has a really happy camper. At that time I despised Windows and most everyone was running DOS with, if they were lucky, 2 MB of RAM and a 20 MB hard drive. ( I'm not aging myself am I? :-) ) When it came time to move to Windows 3.1 I had to find a tool that I liked so I could deliver and thus keep a job. I was going to migrate to VO but CA really ticked me off with their attitude about VO not being "Clipper for Windows" and didn't give Clipperheads an upgrade path. So I picked up Fox2.6 for Windows. Naturally that led me to VFP. The DML is pretty much the reason I use VFP. For other apps I use Delphi and I just finished an app where Delphi is the interface and a VFP DLL manipulates all of the data. It's pretty cool.

I can't believe that there are actually people ( xBasers ) that would use VO ove VFP. I, personally, don't think there is any comparison - VFP wins hands down. My advice for you is to put your colleague in front of VFP and let him work with it. VO is a monster, IMO. And where is the support for it. I would rather write in Clipper with 5Win than use VO. :-)
