The change makes a couple of keys "mute", meaning they do nothing until they see what the next keystroke is. So pressing 'c gets you ç
Pressing 'a gets you á, `a gets converted to à, "u to ü and ~n to ñ. Simple once you get used to it (been using it for years).

I see. Good point. Maybe there is an equivalent for Brit keyboards.
