That's the solution I've usually been using -- for example, if I have a customer lookup, I will show the name, address, etc. next to the combo box.

In a recent application, I actually wound up having two combos right by each other, one searching by ID, one by name. I had links from the parent and the child into the same lookup table, so displaying the lookup info in a text box worked badly. The combo solved this problem....
