I went to college at Brockport in upstate NY, about an hour or so from Buffalo, and I must have taken 20 trips to Niagara Falls during those 4 years! Everyone that I knew who was not from the area wanted to see the falls. Most of the trips were to the Canadian side, as the view is better, the food is better and the area is much nicer. The American side kind of blows once you've been to the other side.
