The military in the US must be exorbitantly expensive (besides the top-of-the-range and state-of-the-art materiel) to run if the men get such benefits. I can't imagine those perks (for staying alive) in the British forces. OK, they learn how to be a fitter, engineer, machine gunner (not much use in civvie street), etc. but don't come out and go to college. Besides, your average British squaddie hasn't got much going on above his chin-strap :-)
