In one computer with WinXP SP2 (I can't remember if this computer has some antivirus installed or not) SQL Server service doesn't want to start becuase I allowed it to use VIA protokol with SQL Server Configuration manager. Try to play with protocols (Server ones, not Client) and see what happens.
