Updates get queued. Of course, if you delete a column, data is lost or if you should change a column type or size you could lose data.

>I've just realized that I can make changes to a database while users are using the system. What is the impact on the users? Does SQL Server just queue the requests for a split second while the change is made would it cause their database read/writes to fail?
