Hi,

Another issue is all of those apps which allow the user to 'go back' and restore previous versions of their registry. Anti-spyware programs, anti-virus programs, Windows XP system restore, etc. There have been numerous times when our users have set their registry back to a previous date/time which did not include the settings in their registry for our app (and other apps as well that were installed since or their settings changed since the last registry backup). It was just too much of a hassle.

Hadn't thought of that one. In the app where we use registry settings most it's only used for general user preferences stuff (window sizes & positions, toolbar docking settings, etc). If our registry keys get deleted it's no big deal because everything just starts up with the default settings and any required registry keys are automatically recreated as needed.

We're also beginning the rewrite of an app in C# (I've been lurking with interest on that thread). One of the subjects for discussion next week with the tech support guys will be user preference settings. I suppose the .NET solution should be .config files (or at least XML) but I haven't given it much thought yet..

Best,
Viv
