>>>What part of that have you missed? A review of Kevin Phillips book "American Theocracy" in this weeks "Time" points out the results of polls showing how 50% of those who voted for Bush believe in the word-for-word accuracy of the Bible.

>>That hardly equates to the Baptists taking over the Beltway. My rights as a non-beliver are enshrined in both Federal and state law. That is, and will continue to be, a fact of life in the US, regardless of your paranoic rantings.

>Don't you know that a magazine article trumps the any rights guaranteed by the state/federal constitution. :)

Oh, damn. I forgot that.

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5290373 reprints a portion of Phillips' book. I've added it to my "read" list, but skimming over this portion I fail to see at all where he illustrates any hard connection between religion and politics in today's America. Yes, Americans are (as a group) very religious, but we (as a group) are just as adamant about the separation of church and state as outlined by the Constitution. The continuing argument over abortion aside, nothing has come out of Congress (or even most state legislatures) to lead me to believe we are tilting towards a theocracy.

It would be illogical to say that a politician's personal religious beliefs don't have any influence. But that influence hardly justifies shouting "theocracy! theocracy!" like some twisted Chicken Little.

Mike Beane's remark was driven more by his obvious dislike for Bush, rather than any basis in fact.
