Thanks Craig,

I installed it on my old laptop, but just realized I am missing a couple of files on my brand new dell inspiron E1705 (beautiful machine). So I want to go back to fetch those.
Yeah, if MS does not change vista before release, I cannot see this in the corporate world, and even less on some poor slobs home computer.
I guess its XP forever...
at least for a while

Peter

PS I see you are going to be at SWfox again, I jope I can make it again this year. Last year's confernece was great

>Assuming you are using Vista build 5308 then, they have made it so that you can't get to the default local admin account without hacking the registry (you could still log into it on Vista 5270). Anyways, the following site will give you the directions for getting back the local admin login...

>Also, at that link look for the section entitled... "Disable User Account Protection (UAP)" and this will give you directions for getting rid of all those annoying Security warnings and also elevating your admin account to true admin on Vista. Now I say "true admin ON VISTA", because even with all these hacks and security group policy changes you still won't have the type of power you are used to seeing in previous versions of the Windows OS with an administrator account. Yes, aggravates me as well and hopefully MS will do something to fix the problem.

>When you run applications on Vista remember to right-click on the shortcuts and tell it to "Run as Administrator" if you need the application to have more rights than default which is next to no rights. If you want a particular application to run as Administrator then every time it is executed (without having to right-click the shortcut and tell it to) then go find the exe on the drive and right-click on it and go into the properties of the executable, Compatibility tab, privelege level, and then check the "Run this program as an administrator" check box.

>Since you say you can't see your C drive or access stuff in it, I am assuming you have created a dual boot system with Vista on a seperate partition. So, after you have done all of this stuff above to give you as much admin privs as you are going to get on Vista you may still need to give yourself full rights to the C drive and propogate those rights to all child folders and files. Once you've done that you should be able to access the files you need and should have less problems.

>As for performance, Vista 5308 is going to be somewhat of a dog no matter what you do. However, at the link I posted above there are a few sections that may help give you a little more speed (they helped me anyways)... look for "Increase Performance" and "Disable System Restore".

>Good luck Peter and welcome to the wild and crazy world of Vista... LOL.
