Thought I would mention that, as an independent, it's important to have a pretty good idea what your "next year" tax bill will be, so that you pay sufficient "estimated taxes" on a quarterly basis.

If you don't, April 15th is pretty rough when you're facing $1,000s of unplanned taxes and penalties.

I made that mistake when I first started as an independent (roughly 20 years ago). My wife still remembers that screwup. Reminds me every year at this time:)
