>>Well, lots of the Northern states are very pretty too, but northern Ontario has more small lakes dotted in and around, glistening everywhere, so in my opinion that makes it prettier.

>I assumed you were referring to the fall foliage. Ontario's pretty, OK, but fairly flat and monotonous up to the Shield (I'm used to the rolling chalk downs where I live). Sure you have lakes, and the area around 1,000 Islands is stunning. But the lakes glisten all year round, so that's not particularly an autumn feature. Then you have Algonquin PP which, to a Brit, is like an adventure wonderland.

Yes, I was referring to the fall foliage. But I was also referring to the entire ambience that makes fall so wonderful. The leaves, the lakes, the rivers, the crispness of the air (without being stupidly cold), the smells... all of it. I love northern Ontario.

>Vermont has foliage in spades plus the mountains, plus the lakes throughout, plus the beautiful white wee hamlets with their white spired churches, babbling brooks. I think the most beautiful area of NW America that I have visited.

Don't get me wrong, Vermont is lovely. So is Virginia and, in it's way, Maine. But for me northern Ontario is tops. Although, I should mention that for sheer stunning 'blow out your eyeholes' magnificence, nothing beats driving the park system from Jasper to Banff (or vice versa). The problem with that is that it becomes almost too much after a couple of hours. The human brain can only take so much magnificence before it starts to shut down and flee in terror.
