We all know that what's going on is wrong yet we buy into it rather than crap all over it like we should.

Business economics today are suicidal, but all that matters is today. $$$ is the legalized drug of today and companies will do anything to get more, just like any other druggie.
The only real difference is that druggies are individuals who only hurt themselves and a few around them. The corporation, on the other hand, screws a whole community or a whole country and only gets praise for doing so, the screwing ignored because the ever-growing profit is all that matters (to them and their ilk).
As for political, just have a look at your own Congress and Administration and you'll see that things are topsy-turvy there too. The Abramoff affair is now basically closed with nary a casualty and President Bush continues to make decisions favouring big business while doing zero for average Joe. Oops, I forgot. There are nice sign-up bonuses for joining the military.

Business - what's left of it anyway - would be happiest with constant war and unemployment rates over 20%. And yet you continue to defend it and the alleged "market".
