I am going to take a step further ... since you mention in your posting that you are looking for a file somewhere on a hard drive, BUT you cite as an example "winword.exe, wordpad.exe" I am thinking that you might be looking for a particular program.
Before you say, "Duh, Art" ... if you are looking for a particular program, then you may not need to search the path.
Just ask Windows to tell you the location of the program that is registered to open files of a particuklar type. For example, if you are looking for "Winword.exe" ask for the program that is associated with "DOC" files.
Is this the case?
