What kind of music when you were DJ-ing?

There was a bulletin board outside Studio A where staff members would leave snarky messages for each other. We basically had four styles of music -- the Morning Show (easy listening), rock (afternoon into the evening), jazz, and overnight. The jazz show in particular, which I was not associated with other than leading into them, was well respected locally, and probably still is. Anyway, the messages would go up on the board. "Rock is for rockheads." "Maybe we should shut down for a few hours at night, let the tubes cool off." Etc.

One of my best memories was on the Sunday night news one night, 10:00. The "kicker", the one that was supposed to leave everyone with a smile on their face, went a little awry. The newsreader, Bev, who now manages a TV news station in Iowa the last I heard, unfortunately read her script for the first time live on the air. The story was about President Nixon's phlebitis attack. A freshman newswriter thought he was having a little joke with Bev. Except the joke was on both of them. "According to Presidential spokesman Ron Ziegler, the President's penis turned black and fell off." She actually read that over the air.

Bev lost it completely. She tried to continue and couldn't. I can still picture her trying to gather her composure unsuccessfully.

I was waiting on deck to do the sports news and was sent to find the jazz guy who was up next. Meanwhile the producer played every cart and sounder he could find. I found the jazz guy in the parking lot, doing a pre-show doobie. "You're on!" I said. He looked at his watch and said "Five minutes." "No, no, you're on, Bev is out of it," I said, and we hotfooted it into the studio.

Memories....

>I worked at several commercial stations in high school and college. Did everything from DJ to news reader to recording commercials and even some sports production.

>>What did you do? I did some (completely amateur) stuff on the college radio station .... rock DJ, news, sports. A number of my contemporaries at WNUR went on to to professional careers in the media. You would recognize some of their names. For me it was just a lark. A fun time.
