I recommend that you go ahead and upgrade to VFP9. It's very stable, has some great new features, and will be the core platform for future enhancements in Sedna (and SednaX).
I don't currently expect to see anything named VFP10, but do expect an SP2 for VFP9 to be released in the same timeframe as Sedna, both of which will require VFP9 to work.
By upgrading to VFP9 now, you get your application on the platform that is supported through 2014.
