Kevin: i'm curious about your take on Kevin McNeish's book '.Net for VFP developers'. Does your experience track w/ whats in the book? Is the book geared more to coverage of the Oakleaf framework? Is it dated due to Net updates? Hi, Chris,
It's an excellent book. I got it back in late 2002, and it helped me significantly. I still refer to the e-version of the book from time to time. In general, the book has a "just right" level of detail. It has soome good chapters on ADO, Winforms, OOP in both C# and VB, the .NET framework classes, data access, web services, etc.
It's difficult for one book to cover everything that a VFP developer would want to know in moving to .NET, but Kevin (and Cathi Gero, who tech-edited the book) certainly did a tremendous job.
I've had enough exposure to the Mere Mortals framework to know that some of the book content is based on aspects of the framework (which would certainly make sense) - but even if you're not using the framework, you can still get great benefit from the book.
Dated? Hard to say. Even if you're new to .NET and you're only using VS2005, I still recommend it. (Though I'd recommend a few VS2005 titles as well).
Hope that helps...
Kevin
