>>>Well said, Alan. Very much in line with my views on all this. I do not believe that the vast majority of illegal immigrants are any threat to national security or even to job security. Clearly, though, some are and we ought to work harder at identifying those. We should find a way to regularize the rest.

>>>As for the future, anyone who wants to come here and work at a legal occupation to build a new life should be welcome. No quotas.

>>Then, I think I (for sure) and you (most likely) be out of the job very quickly. You know how many PhDs in software development and good command of English (in Russia, Bulgaria, and so on) are only wishing that your word would come true. They will come here and work for 1/10th of our wages and will do just as good of a job. They will bring their extended family who will immediately go to our public schools, nursing homes, with all kind of special education, transportation, fuel assistance, etc.

>Hey, Dmitry. Your name wasn't exactly on the manifest of "The Mayflower", was it! There's many a name on this forum that would have been out of place with the "Founding Fathers"

That has always been the case in the U.S. Russians are just one of the more recent immigrant waves. My own family has been here for a few generations but is still a hodgepodge of English, Irish, German, French-Canadian, and who knows what else. My daughters are 1/8 Lithuanian thanks to their maternal grandparents. Virtually all of us came here from somewhere else.

The current immigration debate in Congress has focused on Mexicans. That makes sense based on the numbers but I can't help thinking other groups were similarly resisted when they were the wave du jour. And yet now those of Irish or Italian background, to name two examples, are as assimilated as it gets. I think the same will happen with Mexican-Americans, and in fact it has partly happened already.
