You can use any backend you want, you just need to have a ODBC or ADO connection to it.

depends on the functions you are talking about. But most, I suspect, can not be.

I know of several people how use mysql, but I am not one of them. I am just doing a little with SQL Server and Oracle. Most of the commands thru ODBC are different but once I get the data to foxpro, all commands to that Data are the foxpro same. ;-)
