Funny how things come back and look quite differently :). The disconnect problem was quite common back in the days of coax cable, when we couldn't persuade the users to keep the cables out of the way, then were a much smaller problem with routers (as one person disconnecting one machine to plug her laptop in would disconnect only that machine, not half of the floor), and I pretty much forgot about that.

And now with wireless... yes, you can expect disconnect at any time. I suppose you should go with the local offline views for the time being, and once you migrate to SQL server, check your connection before doing anything.
