Faster than I would expect too, because I've always understood that one should calculate using only 70% of rated speed for any communications.
Also, I'm not sure if there are 7, 8 or 9 bits transmitted. My guess would be 9 (8 + a check-bit).
I have a 1.5 Mbps connection and its adequate for my needs. I could get better but the price difference didn't seem worth it.
