>I have never quite figured out why Philadelphians do not object to "Philly" but San Franciscans object to "Frisco". Personally I prefer calling it San Francisco but that's for aesthetic reasons only. Can you shed any light on the objection of natives to "Frisco"?

>I asked this of a friend in Sonoma, originally from San Francisco, and her response was, "Well, we just don't say that." Her own tendency is to refer to SF as "the City." Well, la di da! LOL

Mike;

"Whoever after due and proper warning shall be heard to utter the abominable word "Frisco," which has no linguistic or other warrant, shall be deemed guilty of a High Misdemeanor, and shall pay into the Imperial Treasury as penalty the sum of twenty-five dollars". - NORTON I, Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico, 1872

I would attribute to those San Franciscan’s who dislike the term “Frisco”, that such distain is due to being a snob, or family conditioning! In my case, it seems to be family conditioning for the most part. Pride is also at stake! Even lowly Oakland is called Oakland! Who would live in Oakland? You would be disowned in an instant. :)

By the way everyone I know who was born in San Francisco calls it, “The City”. I am going to "The City". Translation: I am going to San Francisco. My family on my moms side settled in "The City”, before it was called San Francisco. There are presently six generations of my family that were born and raised in San Francisco. My grandfather was raided on a Dairy Ranch in “The City”.

The simple truth is that we are nuts! :)
