Thanks for your research on my behalf.
I have no backend. Just plain old VFP native tables. I've never tried the cursor adapter or views (at least not by that name). The only times I've used SQL SELECT is when I need a temporary read only look at the data or when I'm trying to combine a couple of tables into a new table. So those subjects are still a bit foreign to me. Your first response with the creation of a filter string works OK and is probably OK in this instance since my grid will only be displaying a half dozen or so records.

That said, I'd like to learn how to use a SELECTed cursor and TABLEUPDATE() but my attempts so far have not been fruitful. In this particular instance the SELECTed cursor will become a child to a parent table. This required me to index it so the relation could be established (the ORDER BY clause seems to be insufficient to establish a relation). Indexing the cursor seems to be incompatible with setting buffering on which is a requirement for TABLEUPDATE(). So I was just running in circles. :(
