If you haven't read about all the enormous changes for the better that have been happening then you aren't trying.
To get you started I'll give you a jumping off point: Bill Crawford's series in National Review. This is the best assemblage of information from Iraq that I've read. He sites numerous accomplishments and links to the stories so you don't have to try scouring the web for them.
