I think this is because in the graphics package white is the ABSENSE of any colour.
If I remember correctly from when goofing with this sort of thing, you need to define a MASK file to go with the picture. How you do that with your graphics package, or whether they apply to GIFs (I've only done it with BMPs) I don't know but HTH
