>Alex, lots of nations got pulled into that ridiculous war. Why was it a French or British issue that a European aristocrat got shot? Why did that require Australian and New Zealand boys to be killed landing on beaches to attack Turkish boys on the cliffs above? That's a good example of why testosterone chest-beating and warmongering is a policy of failure. Ataturk saw that and showed great honor at a time when most statesmen were still talking loudly and waving their big stick. ;-) As a historian you'll know that Ataturk was one of the great statesmen of the century. That's certainly what we remember here, and from our tiny nations thousands of youngsters make their way to those beautiful Turkish beaches to reflect on it every year.

You are correct.

A couple of good books on the subject:
"A Peace to End All Peace" by David Fromkin

"The Guns of August" by Barbara Tuchman

Perhaps one day Ataturk will make it into the curriculums of schools in other first world nations as well.

Somehow I doubt it.
