>I guess you would have been one of those in Trafalgar Square or Berlin throwing your hat in the air and shouting "hurrah!" at the start of WWI. We're going to teach those rotters a lesson. Home by Christmas, too.
John;
Home by Christmas. Where have I heard that before?
1964 Ronald Reagan asserted "we could pave Vietnam over and bring our troops home by Christmas".
Nixon was running for President in 1968. Two of his comments I recall concerning the Vietnam War:
"If the war is not ended when the people choose in November, I pledge to you tonight that the first priority foreign policy objective of our next Administration will be to bring an honorable end to the war in Vietnam." This appealed to the peaceniks who were growing in number everyday.
Not a direct quote by as I recall, the second comment was something like, I see no reason that we cannot pave Vietnam with concrete and have our boys home by Christmas. That again was 1968, during the political campaign for President, and is similar to what Reagan said.
So the war was not over until 1975. Whatever happened to that parking lot? 1968 to 1975 - only seven years.
