Incorrect RECNO() being stored

I am having a problem storing the RECNO() to a field (called Record_Nbr). I am attempting to do this both in the Default Value of a field, plus update it in a Stored Procedure for the given table. This procedure is called from the Record Validation Rule. The tables are buffered using option 3.

The problem is, if two users add a record to the same table at the same time, they both end up storing the same Record Number. I have tried to do this in the Update Trigger, but the Update Trigger will not let me update the current table. I get a "Cannot update the cursor" message when I attempt to use any Trigger to update the current table. So, I end up with a value in my Record_Nbr field that is not the same as the RECNO() value.

Is there a way to do this and have it stored in the Database? I would like to store all of my rules for the data with the data, but cannot find a way to do this particular task.

Thanks in advance for your help!
