If there is a hardware problem with the PC, I would not recommend changing the processor as a first resort.

What happens if the processor is not the problem? Then you have wasted your money on a processor you didn't need. It's hard to isolate what the actual problem is.

However, if you have another processor sitting around, by all means try it.
