I'm going to give John a some slack. Perhaps he is stating what many of us are thinking, but are afraid to say... ah... I don't know.... I don't think he meant it the way it sounded.
I'm asian American. I've felt the realities of discrimination but it was much worse for my parents. But it was from a group of people you would least expect.
