>How does one implement the key combinations for French accent marks on a laptop? My laptop, a fairly new HP model, does not do it. I use ALT + 0233 for the French letter é on my desktop keyboard, but this is not possible on my laptop, unless I hook up a regular keyboard to the laptop?

If your laptop keyboard layout is US, choose US-International in Windows as keyboard layout.

Then for example:

ñ = ~ and n

and so on. If you just want the ´ or ` symbol, then its ´ or ` and [space]
