Yep, education will do it. And conversely, lack of education will produce a regressive result. Additionally, I've always felt that 'liberal' gets confused with being 'not provencial'. In my area, any ideas/peoples that are not local (i.e. provencial) are accused of being 'liberal'. (You guessed it, Louisville is quite conservative... and 'provencial' too.)
