Is it OK to assume that anyone worthy of my app should be able to run at least 800X600? I suspect that many of my prospective users will be running my app on laptops, but isn't it true that even laptops routinely are capable of 800X600? I don't care about the extremely small laptops, like the new Toshiba Libretto.

In the least, the last machine I saw couldn't switch to 800x600 was some poor 386 with Trident 8800 (!) card and W4WG, i.e. it could, but repeated upper inch of the screen at its bottom, and had lots of other troubles.
The main reason many users use 600x480 is that it's the default when they install W95, and nobody tells them how to switch to 800x600. Maybe just a few pictures of how to do it would be sufficient, if you add them to your manual or help. Those who can't do it deserve a tech support call.
