While a Catholic priest may not perform the ceremony unless both parties are Catholic, any couple certainly can marry outside the religion (civil ceremony) or by a minister of another denomination. It does not preclude them from getting married, only from having some religious ceremonies. I think most couples who are of separate denominations probably do that. Or one person decides to join the faith of the other. From what I understand, it is very important in the Jewish faith for the women to be Jewish to carry on the religion in the family. I understand that according to the Halacha the child of a Jewish mother and a non-Jewish father is recognized as a Jew, while the child of a non-Jewish mother and a Jewish father is considered a non-Jew. To become a Jew, the child of a non-Jewish mother and a Jewish father must undergo conversion. I could be wrong though so hopefully someone will correct me if I am.

>It was the very early 1940's. Oh, yes attitudes have changed dramatically in general. Unfortunately there are still remnants of the old attitudes. I have relatives who wouldn't dream of marrying outside Judaism. Tamar may disagree with me, but I think, speaking only from my own small circle of such acquaintances, that mixed marriages that deal with colour have liberated far more than those that deal with religion. There are still people here in Canada from other places who arrange marriages for their children, and their children haven't yet become assimilated enough to say 'No thanks!.

>Look at the Catholic religion for instance. Try to find a priest who will marry a couple where one is not a Catholic, has no intention of converting to Catholicism, and has no interest in guaranteeing that they will raise the children as Catholics. I'm sure they're out there, but I believe they are few and far between.

>>This may be a sensitive question, but how many years ago was that? :o) I only ask because I think a lot has changed regarding attitudes on mixed marriages (mixed religion as well as race) during the past 20 years. Maybe not with everyone, but with a large portion of the population. Of course there are always those who fall within the 'extreme' categories...

>>>>In America, there is no 'letting your son/daughter marry a Black' because when you are an adult, you can do as you wish. That includes choosing your own beliefs and marrying whoever you wish. Of course, if your family really is racist, they may not accept you as a family member afterwards. Really, we hear of those cases in other countries - especially in Muslim countries, not here. It does seem that whenever a case of racism exists (anywhere in the world) the media gets a hold of it (in all countries) and it is broadcast worldwide and everyone thinks 'that would NEVER happen here.' I have not met anyone that racist in at least 20 years in any country other than Germany. Mixed marriages are very common in the South. My best friend's daughter is bi-racial (legally she is considered black), my daughter's best friend is black, the professional I work with and most admire is a black woman. Most people probably really don't even think about it anymore unless something in the media
>>>>brings your attention to it. Our last mayor was black. At least half of my daughter's teachers are black. How come no one ever asks me how many of my friends, coworkers, superiors, teachers, etc are white? The majority of our citizens in this area are black, not white. Interesting perspective...

>>>When my mother (a Jew) married my father (a Russian non-Jew), it took a while before her parents were willing to acknowledge them again. Eventually, they came around and accepted my dad as a member of the family, but for a year or so, it was apparently tense. I should point out that I wasn't there to see it first hand, of course. ;)
