How to limit the treeview to only top levels

If I choose to expand all in the settings, then I see every forum/categories thread messages that I haven't read yet. I know I'm not being clear, but I thought the original example I gave explained it fairly well.

Ok, after verification, yes, this is how it works. When clicking on a forum, you get all the categories. When clicking on a category, you get all the top level of each branch. Then, if you click on a branch, you get them all.
