Sam, I agree that automatic citizenship is a recipe for contrivance. I can tell you horror stories of near-term pregnant women strapping their abdomens to hide their state so they can give birth in their target country and deliver an "anchor baby" that is used to sponsor an entire extended family. Lots of countries see a need to change that. Not every country has a 14th amendment, though ;-)
FWIW, parents of citizen children are rarely deported unless they commit some other crime. The authorities generally prefer to look the other way so the parent stays illegally until the child comes of age and sponsors citizenship for his/her family.
