A client is running SPS 2003 Premium. Everything was working fine, including SharePoint and Monitoring. It appears that a standard install of this product installs 2 instances of SQL Server:

MSSQL$SBSMonitoring - MSDE 2K for Monitoring
MSSQL$SharePoint - WMSDE 2K for SharePoint

He then obtained and installed (on the SBS server) an evaluation version of a Microsoft accounting package. This package apparently requires and installs another instance of SQL Server.

After playing with the accounting package for a while, he realized it's specific to the US and is not suitable for use by Canadian organizations. He then ran the accounting package's uninstallation.

After uninstalling the accounting package, SharePoint and Monitoring no longer worked. After looking into the error messages and doing some research on the Web, he thought it could be because "SQL Server was not installed". He installed SQL Server (default instance, MSSQLSERVER) from the Premium CD. This did not work, so he uninstalled, then installed it again. This didn't fix the problem either. At this point I was called in.

I looked into it and found that the two named instances for Monitoring and SharePoint no longer exist (although their databases were still present). He and I went through several attempts at uninstalling Monitoring and Intranet, but nothing we have done so far has re-established the two named instances.

Can anyone point me to documents that would help fix this problem? TIA.
