Actually, this was probably sometime towards the end of 1997. So the LJ5 driver was what was on the HP web site at that time. The customer that had the problem is no longer here, so I can't check the exact version.

Similar to your solution, we have solved some printing problems by using the LaserJet III Plus driver. This was for a LaserJet "clone" printer. I don't remember the brand.
