Which meant diesesl - gasoline evaporates and doesn't leave stains. We tilted the Yugo about 20 degrees to the side so we syphoned out most of the diesel, and then poured the regular in. Unfortunately, we did try to start the engine on diesel, and it sucked some of it into the carburetor.

Now there was an adventure.

I've got a book for you -- "Setting Free the Bears" by John Irving. No diesel engines that I can remember but the ambiance seems the same. He didn't become a literary star until 3 or 4 years later, with "Garp", but this was the book that let everyone know he was a writer worth paying attention to. He was about 23 at the time -- how depressing.
