My understanding is the same as yours. The middle class is shrinking as people fall into the lower classes. The headline in today's Los Angeles Daily News is that fewer families are able to make ends meet in LA. Somehow they were able to get people to vote against their pocketbooks last election. I just don't see it happening again.

In other words, there may well be far more people actually unemployed than ever before, but because they've fallen off the roles the don't count. With food bank usage rsing dramatically and bankruptcies continuing at high rates that seems more plausible to me.
