Glen, consider PPTP, Point-To-Point-Tunneling-Protocol, which comes with NT Server. GO WINNTMAG and download all the articles on this topic, they are excellent. In brief

1. You dial into the internet.
2. Once on the internet, you dial in *again* using the TCP/IP address. You'll get a private connection within the original connection which is called tunneling.
3. Mount the disks in Explorer or programmatically, as any workstation on the network needs to do, and you're done. Just like being there.

In practice, however, it's painful and slow even at 56k... It does work, however.
