My first car was '78 diesel VW Rabbit. Got 40-50 mpg, but finding diesel fuel back then was a hassle. The biggest issue, though, was no air conditioning.

We replaced it when I was pregnant with Nathaniel in '85. No way was I going through a second time of getting an infant in and out of a two-door car. <g>
