That's why I said "bit of a hint".

Then I may have a guess there... let's try this: remove the status bar for the duration of the init, then put it back at the end (or in activate?). My hunch is that a ctrl+s suspends standard output (which is hidden nowadays) and the status bar is waiting for it.
Another thing to try would be Set Console Off early in init.
