It wasn't that long ago when in the business environment it was frowned upon if you used colloguial southern phrases. Sounding 'southern' gave many in the business world a view of ignorance or that the person was uneducated. Now, it appears to be politically incorrect to not accept any type of speech which is amazing to me. I still suggest that most professional positions require a command of the English language inorder to to acquire the position (whether they state it or not).

>>>As for the Yiddish comparison. I am not so sure that works. Yiddish has literature, poetry, plays and even newspapers written entirely in it. I don't think you can compare it, not even to Ladino.

>>But Yiddish didn't always have that. My sense from what I've heard is that Spanglish is a developing language along the lines of Yiddish. Here's an interview with the professor that I mentioned: http://www.barcelonareview.com/40/e_is_int.htm. (I haven't read this yet--trying to catch up from the weekend.)

>Interesting article. I'm not sure I agree with it all and I certainly have an aversion to Spanglish (as being an illiterate form of Spanish to me). Unfortunately he may be right and the USA is moving towards a business and academic environment where few people speak a grammatically correct form of the language(s). Probably few give a damn anymore.
