You're really on a tear today, aren't you?

Let's stick to one topic - illegal immigration. Chris is right. This isn't some "dirty little secret" - it has been going on for years, and has been for as long as I can remember.

Day laborers have been a constant problem. The police don't do anything about it because they simply can't. No sooner is one gathering point cleaned up, then one or two more appear. There's a stretch of road not two blocks from the sherriff's dept. in my area that many of them gather. Basically, unless the men are breaking the law, police leave them alone.

Did you know there already is a guest-worker program in place for agriculture? I didn't, until I heard it on an NPR program on the way to work. Some farmers use it, but like any other government program, too often the bureaucracy gets in the way.

Yes, business is the reason, but its a chicken-and-egg issue. Would the illegals come here if there was no market for their labor? Would there be a market if they weren't available to come over?

We tried amnesty in 1987, offered with the assurance that our borders were going to be tightened. Didn't happen. LOTS of things have been tried over the years. Hasn't made a difference. So, IMHO, it is high time we revist the issue and try to develop a program that works.

Do you honestly think this topic has been brought up to distract Americans from what's happening in Iraq? Do you really think we are that stupid?
