You know... he didn't used to be this way. I gotta wonder if he has some sort of age-related dementia or Alzheimer's or something.

My mother used to watch him in the late 70s through to about the mid 80s. This was back when the 700 Club was still just getting off the ground and he was not like this at all. He was very low key... didn't grub for money like Jim Bakker, et al. I always thought he was a genuinely good guy. Never talked about anything but how good religion was and spreading peace through the gospel.

Then, somewhere around his run for President in '88 he seemed to start losing it. At the time, his talking about diverting hurricanes and such was a strange departure from his demeanor... but in hindsight, maybe it was just the first sign of a bigger problem.

My wife likes to watch the family channel (I think it's the family channel) sometimes and once in awhile she'll fall asleep with the tv on, and then the 700 Club comes on. I've noticed that his son seems to run the show now and Pat only makes the occasional appearance. But when he does... yikes! Totally different guy. And the difference is striking and sad.
