>>There is a little town north east of San Francisco named Hercules, whose population is listed as 24,000, just east of I-80. The town council and its residents have taken on Wal-Mart, who wants to build a new store at that location. Wal-Mart owns the land, which is near the San Pablo Bay, and the city council has decided to use eminent domain to prevent Wal-Mart from proceeding with its plans.

I can recall seeing the event you referenced on CNN last year. There was no follow up and I do not know the outcome. It should be interesting to see what becomes of little Hercules against the giant Wal-Mart.

Wal-Mart has more cash in its petty cash fund then the value of the entire town of Hercules. Maybe a few dollars in the right direction will get the decision turned around by our courts? :)

During the early 1960’s San Francisco used eminent domain to obtain the homes along what is now the 280 Freeway. Owners were paid less than market value for their homes.

There was one retired man who refused to move, so the city called the Presidio and an M-1 Sherman tank was sent over to level the man’s home. The television cameras were on the front of the house and rear door. As the tank flattened the house the man was seen running out the back door. No additional coverage of this story was ever given. It did make me sick!
