A rocker friend who has played in some pro bands around Chicago, including one that had two albums released, liked to say that one night when no one was paying attention they were going to do an all-Thelonius Monk set. He was joking. I think. Like a lot of other rockers, I'm sure, he was a musical purist at heart who played rock because it was easy for him and paid well. Plus he, uh, liked the lifestyle.
