Whoops, I accidentailly doubled posted instead of doing an update.

>If you have select "user" authentication in your /etc/samba/smb.conf file, which is the usual, be sure to enter user names and passwords under samba. The samba user names and passwords are separate from the Linux OS user names and passwords, even though you can use the same names and passwords in both.

>I like to use the swat tool to configure the smb.conf file and to enter new users and their passwords. Make sure SWAT is running by starting it. Then, to access SWAT, I installed Webmin, which is another tool you can use to work with Linux. I can log into Webmin by entering the following into my browser: [https://localhost:10000]. Once I logged into Webmin, I can start SWAT by clicking on [ Server --> Samba Windows File Share --> SWAT ]. Once you have created a new user name and password in SWAT, be sure and enable the user. In addition to the SWAT tool, Webmin has many tools of its own to work with SAMBA, which are in addition to what SWAT offers.

>Be sure to back up your /etc/samba/smb.conf file before using SWAT, as SWAT will overwrite the smb.conf file when it saves your setting, causing the loss of some very good comments that come with the original smb.conf file. SWAT has a help file which will aid you in completing various entries.

>>I think it is a security issue with my Linux or SAMBA user because I cannot connect to the share when I try to get to in on the Linux machine. I go to the Network browser, select the workgroup and the Linux box - the SAMBA share shows up. When I select it, a username and password window appears. I enter the username and password and it will not connect!

But when I try to connect to the share, I get a message saying "The network path ... cannot be found."
