Hi Naomi,

You cannot control anyone's actions except for your own. It also holds true that you are not responsible for anyone's actions except your own. Having written that, you are completely responsible for your actions and must keep that in mind. Sometimes time alone will heal a damaged relationship in the workplace. If you put enough effort into it - go the extra mile for that person and overtime they may come to see how serious and committed you are to repairing the relationsip. I have seen employees break trusts in the workplace over and over again and keep getting away with it. I am afraid though that I am one of those who have a difficult time overcoming a trust issue. If someone breaks my confidence then they will never gain it back completely.

There are some folks who will never forgive. There are also those who will forgive but never forget. A first time offense (whatever it is) has a better chance of healing overtime. Repetitive offenses however only show those who were wounded that you cannot be trusted and they will probably not invest any effort into repairing the relationship nor ever trust again. Once respect is lost it is almost impossible to gain back.

That doesn't mean don't try. Nor does it mean you will not be successful. In essence, do your best to show that person everyday how hard you are trying to repair the situation and that you are committed to it in the long run. At least then you can look back and say you did try your best instead of only looking back at the damage done. It will not be an easy road - but it will be one worth traveling.
